Ce mardi 15 août 2023, c’est la fête de l’Assomption de Marie.

Cette fête est aujourd’hui, en France, l’une des quatre fêtes catholiques légalement chômées (avec Noël le 25 décembre, l’Ascension et la Toussaint le 1er novembre).

Qu’est-ce que l’Assomption ?

Elévation de la Sainte Vierge au ciel après sa mort (la dormition et l’assomption de la Vierge). L’Église célèbre cette fête le 15 août.

L’Assomption est une des grandes fêtes de la vie chrétienne. Elle célèbre la gloire de Marie avec Dieu au terme de sa vie terrestre. Marie, après sa mort, a été enlevée de la vie terrestre pour entrer dans la vie en Dieu. L’Assomption vient d’un mot latin qui signifie «enlever».

Le 15 août est un jour férié en France depuis 1638, date à laquelle Louis XII consacra le Royaume de France à la Vierge Marie, pour la remercier de lui avoir donné un fils (futur Louis XIV), après 23 années de mariage sans enfant. En 1638, pour accompagner son vœu, Louis XIII demanda que des processions en l'honneur de la Vierge Marie soit organisées dans tout le Royaume. Cette tradition a perduré et les processions en l'honneur de la Vierge Marie sont aujourd'hui encore très nombreuses.
